In
1993, Shirley's sister, Jan Boller, R.N., had this great idea to form a family-owned
company, Teachable Moments, with the purpose of designing educational materials and
products that focus on the needs of the learner.
To
date, Jan's not contributed a single page of product! But then, she's been terribly
encouraging to Shirley and throws a few dollars in the direction of the company, so we're
willing to be patient.
Jan
is currently nearing the final stages of her Ph.D. program in critical care nursing at the
University of California - San Francisco (UCSF), under advisor Dr. Patricia Benner.
Hopefully, we'll get some of her dissertation up and running once it reaches publication.
The dissertation is titled: "Ecology of exercise in patients on maintenance
hemodialysis." Stay tuned. To date, Teachable Moments has
produced two parent-education products, both written by Shirley:
- Humor in Your Home Doesn't Mean Your
Home is a Joke! is a how-to guide and journal that can be used as either a
curriculum text on the subject or as a self-study guide. Its 114 pages help readers learn,
step-by-step, how to plant more humor into their family's lives. In short, easy-to-read
essays, it also explains why humor is so important in strengthening attachment and
planting joy among family members.
- Light Dances: Illuminating Families
with Laughter and Love puts a clearer picture on the depth and breadth of
humor in raising healthy families. More research-based than "Humor in Your
Home," yet more fun to read, as well.
